We present the first publicly available machine translation (MT) system for Basque. The fact that Basque is both a morphologically rich and less-resourced language makes the use of statistical approaches difficult, and raises the need to develop a rule-based architecture which can be combined in the future with statistical techniques. The MT architecture proposed reuses several open-source tools and is based on a unique XML format to facilitate the flow between the different modules, which eases the interaction among different developers of tools and resources. The result is the rule-based Matxin MT system, an open-source toolkit, whose first implementation translates from Spanish to Basque. We have performed innovative work on the following tasks: construction of a dependency analyser for Spanish, use of rich linguistic information to translate prepositions and syntactic functions (such as subject and object markers), construction of an efficient module for verbal chunk transfer, and design and implementation of modules for ordering words and phrases, independently of the source language.

Now a days, number of Web Users accessing information over Internet is increasing day by day. A huge amount of information on Internet is available in different language that can be access by anybody at any time. Information Retrieval (IR) deals with finding useful information from a large collection of unstructured, structured and semi-structured data. Information Retrieval can be classified into different classes such as monolingual information retrieval, cross language information retrieval and multilingual information retrieval (MLIR) etc. In the current scenario, the diversity of information and language barriers are the serious issues for communication and cultural exchange across the world. To solve such barriers, cross language information retrieval (CLIR) system, are nowadays in strong demand. CLIR refers to the information retrieval activities in which the query or documents may appear in different languages. This paper takes an overview of the new application areas of CLIR and reviews the approaches used in the process of CLIR research for query and document translation. Further, based on available literature, a number of challenges and issues in CLIR have been identified and discussed.

Emaitzetan oinarrituta, sistemen sailkapen bat egin dugu, baita etorkizuneko ikerkuntza bideratuko duten zenbait analisi kualitatibo ere, hain zuzen, ebaluazio-bildumako azpi-multzoen analisia, iturburuko esaldien analisi estrukturala eta itzulpenen errore-analisia. Lanak analisi hauen hastapenak aurkezten ditu, etorkizunean zein motatako analisietan sakondu erakutsiko digutenak.Hitz gakoak: itzulpen automatikoa, ingelesa, euskara, ebaluazioa, bikotekako konparazioa, errore analisia ABSTRACT This dissertation reports on the crowd-based large-scale English-Basque machine translation evaluation campaign, Ebaluatoia. This initiative aimed to compare system quality for five machine translation systems: two statistical systems, a rulebased system and a hybrid system developed within the IXA group, and an external system, Google Translate. We have established a ranking of the systems under study and performed qualitative analyses to guide further research. In particular, we have carried out initial subset evaluation, structural analysis and error analysis to help identify where we should place future analysis effort.
