Angular distribution in resonant Auger decay

Abstract: The angular distribution of Auger electrons in the decay of resonantly excited atomic states is studied theoretically. The two-step model is used for B description of the Auger process with the excited electron as a spectator. Expressions for the angular anisotropy parameters in the jK and jj coupling schemes are obtained for excitation of a closed-shell system. A close relation between the angular anisotropies of the resonant Auger and normal Auger processes is found within the framework of the spectator mode… Show more

“…Coherence effects (quantum beats) have been mentioned as potential a cause for the discrepancy between theory and experiment [3]. However, according to our estimates the spectral bandwidth of the photons Au « 1/AT, where AT is the typical pulse length in a storage ring.…”

“…In contrast the ISCI is likely to be fundamentally important for the anisotropy of the Auger decay of Kr 3d3/25@]/23/2 and Xe 4dz&&6pi~2 s~2 resonances. Previous calculations of these Auger spectra which were based on JK coupling model [3] and neglected the ISCI effect failed to reproduce the experimental data of Carlson et al [10,11].…”

“…This is a so-called gross-spectator model (Kämmerling et al 1990). In this model it is possible to obtain a relation (Hergenhahn et al 1991) between the anisotropy parameter of a normal Auger transition and the anisotropy parameters of the corresponding resonance Auger transitions summed over the multiplet which appears due to coupling of the vacancy with the spectator electron. This relation can be generalized to any intrinsic parameter.…”

“…Meanwhile, a number of experimental and theoretical investigations have been done by several groups (e.g. Kämmerling et al 1990, Hergenhahn et al 1991, Chen 1993; for further references we refer to the cited papers and to the recent review by Schmidt (1992)). Measuring the angular distribution can yield more refined information, in the sense of a complete experiment (e.g.…”
