Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Ins/Del Polymorphism and Body Composition: The Intermediary Role of Hydration Status

Abstract: Background: The well-known insertion/deletion polymorphism (rs4646994) of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene has been previously associated with obesity, blood flow, muscular strength, and ACE enzyme activity. Despite the relevant role of ACE in homeostasis, few data are currently available on the relationship between rs4646994 and hydration status. Thus, we tested the association between the ACE Ins/Del polymorphism, body composition, and hydration status in a young Italian population. Methods: A to… Show more

“…Coelho et al 22 verified the following frequencies in soccer players of different categories from Southeast region in Brazil: DD (29,42%), ID (51,42%) e II (19,14%), then, the genotypes did not present difference (P = 0,85). Bordoni et al 8 have tested the association between ACE I-D polymorphism, corporal composition and hydration state in 306 Italian young and verified frequencies DD (41%), ID (44%) and II (15%). The data shows an inversely proportional relationship between frequencies of genotypes DD and II when compared to the frequencies of the present study.…”

“…Subjects with the BMI percentile > 85th according to sex and age were classified as overweight (as percentiles represents the gold standard to define overweight in children), in agreement with the IOTF cut-offs [38]. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was carried out using BIA (BIA Akern 101, Akern s.r.l), as previously described [39]. Data about FM percentage (FM%), body cellular mass (BCM), and phase angle (PhA) were collected.…”
