Angiotensin-converting enzyme activity in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid after damage to the alveolo-capillary barrier in the human lung

Abstract: Angiotensin-converting enzyme activity in serum or bronchoalveolar lavage fluid does not reflect damage of endothelial cells or damage of alveolocapillary integrity in acute pulmonary disease.

“…Even if there are some studies related to the use of corticosteroids to prevent these side-effects, many different studies show conflicting results about this topic. 9,17,21,22 In conclusion, although some operative techniques (e.g. beating heart surgery and its variants) have been developed, recently, these are suitable for only some patients and cardiopulmonary bypass is still the main technique used in cardiovascular surgery.…”

“…Clinical data regarding the suitability of ACE as a biomarker for lung damage is inconsistent. Whereas some studies have shown a positive correlation between elevations of ACE in serum or bronchoalveolar lavage fluids of patients suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS, including alveolar edema) or sarcoidosis [33,36,37], others doubt the prognostic value of ACE levels [38,39]. Besides its role as potential biomarker, ACE has been discussed as mediator of lung injury and blocking of ACE activity has been shown to attenuate inflammation [40,41].…”

“…Angiotensins are peptides involved in maintaining blood pressure control and arterial hypertension by increasing the secretion of aldosterone 11 and promoting sodium retention by the kidneys 12 . ACE2 receptors are attached to the surfaces of the lungs, heart, and kidney cell membranes 13,14 .…”
