Angiosarcoma of the chest wall in a patient with fibrous dysplasia

Abstract: We have experienced a case of angiosarcoma of the chest wall in a patient with fibrous dysplasia. The patient was a 64-year-old man and had large bilateral thoracic masses. Each tumor, resected metachronously with the chest wall, was diagnosed as angiosarcoma. One of these tumors had a histological component of fibrous dysplasia. The patient died from brain metastasis 19 months after the first operation. Angiosarcoma associated with fibrous dysplasia of the chest wall is very rare.

“…[ 36 ] To the best of our knowledge, 34 cases of metastatic brain angiosarcoma have been reported, half of which were metastases from the heart [ Table 1 ]. Only two previous cases had a history of expanding hematoma in a short period as was observed in our case.…”

“…Malignant changes with fibrous dysplasia include Osteosarcoma, Fibrosarcoma, Chondrosarcoma, Malignant fibrous histiocytoma & Ewings sarcoma [4] . Association of Amelobastoma, Cystic degeneration, Angiosarcoma [8] , Frontal sinus mucocele [9] have also reported. Treatment is primarily surgery.…”

“…“Extended resection” is the preferred method of treatment. According to published reports, surgical treatment is indicated for benign tumors, malignant tumors without distant metastasis, and metastatic tumors (a survival benefit may be achieved in patients with controlled primary lesions and no other distant metastases). Extended resection also offers the benefit of preventing relapses, which is important because even benign tumors can recur locally.…”
