Angiosarcoma associated with foreign body material: A report of three cases

Abstract: The production of tumors through solid-state mechanisms has been demonstrated in experimental animals, but foreign body tumorigenesis has not been proven definitively in man. The authors report three patients with angiosarcoma that occurred in intimate association with foreign material retained for prolonged periods. Although several etiologic factors have been defined in angiosarcoma, foreign bodies generally are not appreciated to have this potential. Review of the literature disclosed six cases of angiosarc… Show more

“…28,32,33 We observed that AS rates rose steadily among whites from 1978 through 2004, although they declined among white men in recent years. AS has been reported in association with chronic lymphoedema, 34 vascular malformations, 35 arteriovenous shunts, 36 environmental exposures, 37 xerodermal pigmentosum, 38 and retinoblastoma. 39 There are some possible explanations for the overall increase in incidence rates of AS.…”

“…Artificial implants and accidental foreign-body material are associated with occasional soft tissue sarcomas in humans, although precise figures are not available (35). It has been argued that the rate must be low because of the small number of implant-associated soft tissue sarcomas reported in the literature despite the frequent use of various implants for medical purposes (36).…”

“…Most cases have an aggressive behavior with a median survival of seven months, and 5 year survival of about 35%. 5 Palliative chemotherapy for disseminated disease is hampered by toxicities and poor response rates.…”
