Angiomyolipoma of the liver

Abstract: Hepatic angiomyolipoma is a rare and benign entity. It has a wide variation and poses a diagnostic challenge clinically, radiologically, and pathologically. Its prognosis is good regardless of management, including hepatic resection or conservative treatment after tissue biopsy by echo-guided needle. To alleviate the mass effect, surgical resection may be needed for hepatic angiomyolipoma in selected cases.

“…Meanwhile, given the high incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma in China and the overlapping imaging presentations of hepatic AML and hepatocellular carcinoma, a diagnosis of hepatic AML should not be made hastily in patients whose diagnosis has not been confirmed by the above investigations. Most researchers believe that hepatic AML is a benign tumor and therefore advocate conservative treatment [17,18]. In our study, pathological examination results showed that the tumor was benign in all patients and no evidence of intra-or extra-hepatic metastases was identified in any patient after long-term follow-up.…”

“…Most cases of hepatic AML and cavernous hemangioma have a good prognosis regardless of the management strategy [25] , but hepatocellular carcinoma should be removed surgically. We report the extremely rare case of an HCC tumor accompanied with a concomitant hepatic AML and a hepatic cavernous hemangioma occurring in adjacent positions.…”
