Angiographic Diagnosis of Small Intestinal Intussusception

Abstract: The outstanding angiographic features of small intestinal intussusception are: (a) abrupt disappearance of mesenteric vessels at the neck of the intussusception with crowding of the vasa recta; (b) appearance of long collateral channels at the neck of intussusception; (c) angulation and retraction of major intestinal branches; (d) reversal of the course and angulation of the invaginated mesenteric vessels; (e) overlapping of the mesentery vessels by branches of the intussuscipiens; (f) abrupt change in the app… Show more

“…A number of different radiological and endoscopic methods have been described as useful in the diagnosis of intussusception: plain abdominal film, barium studies, abdominal sonography, abdominal CT scan, angiography, radionucleotide studies, and magnetic resonance imaging. [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] Most studies advise that abdominal CT provides the most accurate diagnostic rate for intestinal intussusception. 1,8,12 In our study, an 88.6% diagnostic rate of intestinal intussusception was achieved using abdominal CT scans.…”

“…Angiographic criteria for intestinal intussusception have been described, including abrupt disappearance of mesenteric vessels, angulation of invaginated vessels, overlap of mesentery vessels by branches of the intussuscipiens, and abrupt changes of the vasa rectae of the intussuscipiens [12]. However, angiography is an unnecessarily invasive procedure.…”

“…Several methods can contribute to the preoperative diagnosis of intussusception, such as abdominal CT scan, abdominal ultrasound, plain film, angiography, and radionucleotide studies. [ 6 , 10 ] Among them, Abdominal CT is reportedly the most useful tool. With typical target or sausage sign, abdominal CT scans are of great help of diagnosis of intussusception with diagnostic accuracy rates ranging from 58 to 100%.…”
