Angioarchitecture of collateral arteries of the aortic arch of Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus Linnaeus, 1758)

Abstract: The aortic arrangement is an important structure associated with the maintenance of homeostasis. Based on this information, this study was conducted to describe the collateral arteries of the aortic arch of Antillean manatee and define the standard model for the species. Three specimens, an adult male, adult female and a male neonate, all strandings on the coast of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, were used. The study was performed in the Laboratory of Morphophysiology of Vertebrates of the Federal Un… Show more

“…At the branching level of the AA, the branching pattern in mammals has been classified into three different types according to the number of major arteries branching directly from the AA [ 33 ]. In AA-type 1, only one artery, the BCT, emerges from the AA.…”

“…Three collateral arteries arising from the aortic arch have been reported in the black tamarin ( Saguinus niger ) (Branco et al, 2017), tufted capuchin ( Sapajus apella ) (Furtado et al, 2017), Mongolian gerbil ( Meriones unguiculatus ) (Oliveira et al, 2018), brown‐throated sloth ( Bradypus variegatus ) (Albuquerque et al, 2018), black‐tufted marmoset ( Callithrix penicillata ) (Souza Neto et al, 2019) and manatee ( Trichechus manatus ) (Oliveira, Santoro, et al, 2020), namely the brachiocephalic trunk, the left common carotid artery and the left subclavian artery, in a type 3 arrangement. This model was not observed in the collared peccaries analysed herein.…”

“…Solid circulatory system knowledge is an important prerequisite for the correct interpretation of cardiovascular diseases (Oliveira, Santoro, et al, 2020). Animal models have been applied for decades in the study of vascular diseases that affect humans, such as atherosclerosis, and mammals are the most employed in this regard (Narayanaswamy et al, 2000).…”

“…Para isso o estudo das doenças dos peixes-bois é importante para evitar a disseminação de patógenos dos animais de cativeiro aos animais em vida livre. Desta forma, as estratégias para minimizar as ameaças aos peixes-bois tornam-se essenciais para a garantia da biodiversidade do peixe-boi [13,48].…”
