The use of anaesthetic agents has been increasing to address the welfare needs of different fish species in scientific and aquaculture practices. MS‐222 is the most used synthetic anaesthetic but some limitations and side effects have been reported. Natural substances have been used as potential substitutes with clove oil playing an important role due to its eugenol content. Yet, other monoterpenes have shown anaesthetic properties in different fish species. As such, a quantitative assessment has been conducted to explicitly relate and summarise the use of monoterpenes with described anaesthetic properties in fish. A combined PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed Central and Europe PMC electronic database search was performed, from January 2002 to August 2022, following the PRISMA guidelines. Out of 1555 articles retrieved from the literature search, 30 English reports met the criteria for inclusion in the meta‐analysis through a generic inverse‐variance method (random‐effects model) and according to the fish age. The findings show a total of 10 different monoterpenes with high homogeneity and effectiveness in inducing anaesthesia and recovery according to the fish anaesthetic criteria. Further subgroup analysis showed these effects were independent of fish age. Meta‐regression of the included studies revealed an inverse linear association between anaesthesia induction and recovery time and water bath temperature while no further correlation was found with other confounding factors (body weight, water pH and dissolved oxygen levels). Although further studies will be required, this meta‐analysis provides robust evidence that different monoterpenes serve as an attractive and effective alternative for fish anaesthesia although water bath temperature also played an important role in anaesthesia outcome.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of therapy for compensated intestinal dysbiosis in cats

Relevance. Despite the constant improvement of methods for correcting the intestinal microbiota, the occurrence of dysbacteriosis in various pathological processes not only does not decrease, but, on the contrary, increases. Therefore, the choice of the optimal therapeutic regimen for the correction of the lightest compensated degree of intestinal dysbiosis in cats, in our opinion, is an urgent direction of scientific research in veterinary medicine.Methods. Evaluation of the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy in cats with compensated intestinal dysbiosis (n = 15) is given. The animals were divided by the envelope method into two experimental groups: A1 (n = 6) and A2 (n = 9). The dynamics of individual hematological and immunological blood parameters of cats with grade 1 dysbiosis in the course of their therapy (before treatment, on days 7 and 14) is shown.Results. With compensated intestinal dysbiosis in cats, the appointment of the Purina Pro Plan dietary food shows a therapeutic effect, which leads to an overall clinical improvement as early as after 6.16±0.60 days. However, the use of the probiotic «Lactobifadol» against the background of diet therapy normalizes appetite after 2.39 days, an unpleasant odor from the oral cavity after 0.84 days, feces after 0.89 days, accelerates the overall clinical improvement of animals with intestinal dysbiosis of the 1st degree by 2.16 days earlier, when compared with the indicators of cats of the A1 group.

Sturgeon broodstock management includes unavoidable handling and surgery procedures such as biopsy, endoscopy, laparotomy, oviduct incision inducing stress response. Clove oil and 2‐phenoxyethanol (2‐PE) are anesthetics commonly used in aquaculture to reduce the stress. The present study aimed to determine the anesthetic efficiency, hematological, histopathological and echocardiographic effects of clove oil and 2‐PE in adults Danube sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii). Experimental fish were exposed to anesthetic baths to 20, 40 and 80 μl/L clove oil and 250, 500 and 750 μl/L 2‐PE concentrations and the induction‐recovery timed were recorded. The induction and recovery times in Danube sturgeon were significantly affected by clove oil and 2‐PE concentrations. The results showed that 2‐PE at 250–500 μl/L concentration failed to induce anesthesia; however, 750 μl/L concentrations induced anesthesia within 290 s. The optimum concentrations of clove oil showed in the present work were between 40 and 80 μl/L concentrations induced anesthesia within 180–120 s. The anesthetized fish showed alteration in hematological and echocardiographic indices was time dependent. RBC, HCT and LYM values in 40 and 80 μl/L clove oil and 750 μl/L 2‐PE groups were significantly lower than control group in 4th h. The mean heart rates were significantly affected before and after anesthesia treatment at clove oil. Whereas, no significant changes were observed in mean heart rates for 2‐PE. Fish anaesthetized with clove oil or 2‐PE exhibited histopathological deformity symptoms in the gill compared to control groups. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that minimum effective concentration of clove oil was 40 μl/L for short‐term anesthesia, but 80 μl/L concentration is suitable for deep anesthesia. 2‐PE may not be suitable for adult Danube sturgeon due to long induction time and high concentration. It is also concluded that higher anesthetic concentrations may have detrimental effects on the fish gill tissue.
