Anemia Is an Indicator for Worse Organ Damage Trajectories in Patients with Systemic Sclerosis: A Retrospective Study

Abstract: It is important for clinicians to determine the risk of worsening trajectories in SSc patients. The Scleroderma Clinical Trials Consortium (SCTC) Damage Index (DI) has been developed to quantify organ damage and shows good capability for mortality and morbidity prediction in patients with SSc. This retrospective study aimed to describe the SCTC-DI in Chinese SSc patients and to find features predicting worse organ damage trajectories based on SCTC-DI. A total of 433 SSc patients who met the inclusion criteria … Show more

“…We are sure these could not be due to hemolytic anemia, even though this has been seen in certain case reports with similar presentations and antibody profiles [ 16 ]. Anemia is significant, as it has been proven to be a marker for more severe organ damage [ 17 ] in systemic sclerosis. Throughout the course of treatment, blood transfusions were provided, and while this provided some respite, it did not completely cure the patient, and in retrospect, this was probably the cause of worsening heart failure as well.…”

“…To increase the intake of good protein or advantageously induce body protein synthesis, non-protein calorie/nitrogen ratio (NPC/N), which is the balance between energy and protein, is considered. NPC/N is an index demonstrating the amount of carbohydrate and lipid that should be consumed so that the consumed protein can be effectively utilized [ 5 ].…”
