Anemia is a poor prognostic factor for stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT)

Abstract: HighlightsThis study reports on the prognostic ability of haematological parameters for the largest known biopsy-proven stage-I medically inoperable cohort treated with SBRT.After SBRT, the median values of Hb, ALC, ANC and TPC declined whereas the NLR and the PLR increased as compared to pre-SBRT.Anemia along with other parameters was found to be a poor prognostic factor for local control despite treatment with SBRT to doses of >100 Gy BED10.Simple and minimally invasive methods like a peripheral blood sample… Show more

“…Patients with adenocarcinoma had the lowest prevalence of baseline anemia (29.34%), P<0.001. Our study shows that the proportion of non-smokers is relatively high compared with other study ( 18 ), which may be related to the population of the study. A data from the Asian population published by Zhang shows that the proportion of non-smokers is 42.8% ( 10 ), the proportion of non-smoking patients in our study is similar to Zhang's study.…”

“…According to previous studies on anemia and lung cancer prognosis, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are the main methods used to treat lung cancer ( 10 , 12 , 13 , 18 , 19 ). In the past decade, targeted therapy and immunotherapy have changed the treatment mode of advanced lung cancer.…”

“…33 Pathak et al evaluated 487 patients with stage I NSCLC treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and reported that patients with anemia before treatment had increased local recurrence and distant metastasis rates; additionally, the OS rate of these patients was significantly lower. 34 The potential diagnostic or prognostic significance of RDW in malignant tumors has also attracted increasing attention in recent years. Koma et al 35 retrospectively analyzed the data of 332 patients with lung cancer, including 109 women and 223 men who were divided into groups according to RDW values of ≥15% and <15%; the findings of their study confirmed that high levels of RDW are associated with advanced stage disease and indicate poor prognosis in the patients.…”

“…However, there is limited literature available on the prognostic significance of anemia in patients with NSCLC undergoing SBRT. 18 , 19 The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between pre-treatment anemia and prognosis in patients with NSCLC treated with SBRT.…”
