Androgenic Maintenance of the Rat Erectile Response Via a Non‐Nitric‐Oxide‐Dependent Pathway

CHRISTOPHER M. REILLY,
RONALD W. LEWIS,
VIVIESNNE S. STOPPER
et al.

Abstract: Prior studies have demonstrated that the erectile response in the rat penis is androgen dependent and is mediated by nitric oxide (NO), the neurotransmitter synthesized by the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). The present studies used l‐nitro‐l‐arginine methyl ester (L‐NAME), an inhibitor of NOS, to determine if androgens also regulate alternative pathways leading to the erectile response but not mediated by NO. Castrated rats that were treated with L‐NAME (L‐NAME CASTRATE) exhibited little or no increase in… Show more

“…Elevated LDL-cholesterol was found in all patients in this study. Several studies have shown that endothelial relaxation is impaired if the blood vessel wall is exposed to oxidized-LDL, and these free radicals can inactivate nitric oxide [24] . Some scientists experience in clinic has indicated that lowering LDL with hepatic hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors alone moderated erectile dysfunction [25,26] .…”

“…Testosterone can also modulate the structure and innervation of trabecular smooth muscle cells of penile vessels and the fibroelastic properties of the corpus cavernosum [ 147 ]. It acts as a vasodilator in the penis in part by stimulating the release of NO [ 148 ].…”
