“…Qurt medaka ( Oryzias latipes ) cultured in the Aquatic Health Program at the University of California at Davis were used for the exposure study (Leon, 2007). Medaka eggs were collected from the culture system and maintained in embryo rearing solution (1 g/L NaCl, 0.030 g/L KCl, 0.040 g/L CaCl 2 .H 2 O, 80 mg/L MgSO 4 and 1 mg/L Methylene Blue in distilled water) until hatching.…”

“…The appearance of histological sections, coupled with analysis of Vtg expression, is considered one of the most sensitive endpoints for determining whether endocrine disruption has occurred [67]. Exposure to both estrogenic and androgenic compounds has been shown to reduce GSI and increase the incidence of germ cell necrosis, which may represent an interruption of spermatogenesis [40], [68], [69]. Notably, moderate levels of necrosis were higher (marginally significant) and severe cases of necrosis were significantly higher and GSI in males was significantly lower at the urban beach, at which we detected the presence of both estrogenic and androgenic compounds.…”

“…Tissue sections were examined under a BH-2 Olympus microscope for common and/or significant lesions. Lesions in testes were qualitatively scored on a scale of 0 =  not present, 1 =  mild, 2 =  moderate, and 3 =  severe [40]. Although ovaries were also sectioned, most were not of a high enough quality to be scored.…”

“…Females in both mammalian and fish species exposed to 17b-trenbolone during early life stages demonstrate masculinization, characterized by increased anogenital distance, decrease in nipple number, and increases in genital malformations among rats (Hotchkiss et al, 2007) and increases in ovotestis and male secondary sex characteristics in mosquitofish (Sone et al, 2005). Male medaka exposed during development to 11-ketotestosterone exhibited increases in thyroid follicular hypertrophy (León et al, 2007). Adult female medaka and fathead minnow exposed to 17b-trenbolone display increased development of male secondary sex characteristics (Seki et al, 2006) and decreased fecundity (Ankley et al, 2003).…”
