And yet, migration, population growth or mortality are not balanced among Cantabrian brown bear subpopulations. Reply to Blanco et al (2020)

Abstract: In a recent paper, we presented new evidence and provided new insights on the status of Cantabrian brown bear subpopulations, relevant for this species conservation. Namely, we revealed the likely phylogeographic relation between eastern Cantabrian subpopulation and the historical Pyrenean population. We have also detected an asymmetric flow of alleles and individuals from the eastern to the western subpopulation, including seven first-generation male migrants. Based on our results and on those of previous stu… Show more

“…Human behaviors like disturbance, persecution, and poaching do not produce changes in the quality index describing human impacts. Detecting and quantifying those changes is inherently difficult, but they could have effects on the survival and the presence of bears (Ferreira et al, 2021;Lamamy et al, 2019). In addition, other studies analyzed that natural and climatic variables have a greater weight in the population trend of the Cantabrian brown bear (Martínez Cano et al, 2016).…”

“…However, there are other important aspects in addition to updating these protected areas. It is essential to reinforce the protection within the current protected areas by increasing surveillance and control to reduce factors that have a great impact on the survival and demography of the species, such as poaching, direct persecution, or disturbance (Ferreira et al, 2021;Lamamy et al, 2019).…”
