Ancillary Impacts of Harvest Residue Pelletization

Abstract: This paper analyzes the implications on employment, taxation, and wildfire fuel reduction costs when using mobile pellet mills to remove biomass and reduce wildfire fuels. Wildfire suppression costs in British Columbia have exceeded the set budget in 9 of the last 10 years and the province has only reduced the fuel load on a fraction of the high-risk hectares. Using a novel high-moisture mobile pellet mill allows the production of 89,000 tonnes of wood pellets each year for a price of $293 tonne −1 . Each tonn… Show more

“…Ultimately, transportation distance is a decisive factor in the economics of biomass pellets based power plants [24]. We conclude that in addition to accelerating the existing support for baler use, the sup[port should be extended to the establishment of the enabling small-scale pelletization operations, new storage systems for safe keep of pellets and managed marketing, and the necessary infrastructure for loading and unloading pellets for full utilization of rail systems.…”

“…The fuel cost is a major cost item, 60% to 66% of the hourly cost of the truck. Fixed costs are a small portion of the total hourly cost of the equipment [11]. Tire cost is another operating cost that must be calculated carefully.…”
