Ancient Neurilemmoma (Schwannoma)

Abstract: Dahl, I. Ancient neurilemmoma (schwannoma) . Acta path. microbiol. scand. Sect. A, 85: 812-818, 1977. A clinical and light microscopic study of 11 patients with ancient neurilemmoma is presented. Ancient neurilemmoma is a cellular form of ordinary neurilemmoma, showing nuclear polymorphism and hyperchromasia. “…Schwannomas can show a variety of degenerative changes, such as cyst formation, calcification, hemorrhage, and hyalinization (5). Tumors that have undergone cystic degeneration (presumably because they have outgrown their blood supply) are sometimes capable of relatively rapid expansion because of enlargement of their cystic component (18).…”

“…Nuclear atypia, xanthomatous change, and fibrosis are additional histopathological findings. The abundance of foamy macrophages, discreet verocay bodies may misdiagnose malignancy [12]. The above longstanding histopathological alteration has yielded the term as "Ancient Schwannoma".…”
