Anatomy of the Kidneys of a Newly Born Pigmy Hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis Morton)

Abstract: This is probably the first description of the renal anatomy of the pigmy hippopotamus. The observations were made with dissecting and transmitted light microscopes. Nephrons were micro‐dissected from macerated portions of the kidney. The apex of the renal loops is always at the wide helicoidal portion of the nephron and occurs in all zones but especially in the outer zone of the medulla. The kidney is the branched tubus maximus type, similar to that of the Nile hippopotamus. Distinguishing features are indicat… Show more

“…These papillae can be associated with a tubus maximus, which is "a supreme collecting duct lined by collecting duct epithelium, with no definitive wall and into which terminal collecting ducts open around. Thus the term is applicable to the cephalic and caudal extensions of the diminutive renal pelvis of the Equidae and Hippopotamidae, to the lobar branches of these extensions in the Hippopotamidae (Maluf, 1978(Maluf, , 1994b, and to the re-ceptacles of the terminal collecting ducts in every lobe of the Rhinocerotidae" (Maluf, 1987(Maluf, , 1989c(Maluf, , 1991a.…”

“…The first two components may be included under the term pars convoluta proximalis and the third component under pars lata descendens (cf. Maluf, 1978). Change into the narrow descending segment (pars tenuis descendens) is fairly abrupt and, for the long loops, occurs in the inner stripe of the outer medulla.…”
