Anatomy and white matter connections of the inferior frontal gyrus

Abstract: The inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) is involved in the evaluation of linguistic, interoceptive, and emotional information. A detailed understanding of its subcortical white matter anatomy could improve postoperative morbidity related to surgery in and around this gyrus. Through GQI-based fiber tracking validated by gross anatomical dissection as ground truth, we characterized the fiber tracts of the IFG based on relationships to other well-known neuroanatomic structures. Diffusion imaging from the Human Connectom… Show more

“…The right IFG is mainly implicated in sensory input processing related to expectation and attention. The decline of its function indicates the impairment of attention and the impairment of language processing (Sherman et al, 2016;Briggs et al, 2019). A growing body of evidence suggests that SMA is not only a motor structure but also involves in a wide range of cognitive fields (Bonini et al, 2014;Leek et al, 2016).…”

“…A white matter tract identification technique consisting of gross brain dissection and generalized q-sampling tractography has been implemented previously to suggest links between form and function for other brain regions 12 , 13 . Here we investigate the structural organization and network connectivity of the fusiform gyrus.…”

“…We have utilized similar procedures for GQI tractography in prior studies 12,13 . We performed brain registration to Montreal Neurologic Institute (MNI) space, wherein imaging is warped to fit a standardized brain model for comparison between subjects 16,17 .…”

“…U-fibers of the frontal and parietal lobes have been shown to play an important role in sensorimotor integration (Catani et al, 2012(Catani et al, , 2017, and have been hypothesized to coordinate movement planning and execution by linking motor and premotor regions (Catani et al, 2012). Moreover, the right PO has been specifically linked with fine motor control of manual motion (Briggs et al, 2019;Liakakis et al, 2011).…”
