Anatomically safe sites for intramuscular injections: a cross-sectional study on young adults and cadavers with a focus on the thigh

Abstract: The anatomical safety of intramuscular injections at the deltoid and ventrogluteal sites has been investigated; however, the anatomical relationship between intramuscular injection sites in the thigh and major blood vessels and nerves remains unclear. We aimed to compare intramuscular injection sites in the rectus femoris and vastus lateralis with those at the deltoid and ventrogluteal sites and identify safe intramuscular injection sites in the thigh. Twenty-seven young adult volunteers were recruited, and th… Show more

“…This site has been deemed the safest intramuscular route, although the middle of the muscle should be the target, not the upper or lower portion, as its adjacency to the muscle branch of the femoral nerve and the lateral circumflex femoral artery. 40,43,44 Intradermal delivery by contrast is visible and therefore easier to ensure correct administration. With moderate heat-assisted GET, there are the advantages of muscle delivery with an intradermal approach.…”

“…Nurses are responsible for relieving individuals with the methods and techniques they apply in care (11,25). In the literature, it is stated that gender is important among the factors affecting pain behavior in individuals, and men can tolerate pain better with the effect of universal and social reasons (11,26).…”

“…In some cases, they may decide not to be vaccinated. Also, needle injection through the intramuscular route is preferable to the intradermal route (21). This will make intramuscular vaccines more acceptable when compared with the intradermal route.…”
