Anatomical study on the innervation of the elbow capsule

Abstract: ObjectivesTo put forward an anatomical description of the innervation of the elbow capsule, illustrated through morphological analysis on dissections.MethodsThirty elbows from fresh fixed adult cadavers aged 32–74 years, of both sexes, were dissected.ResultsAmong the dissected arms, we observed that the median nerve did not have any branches in two arms, while it had one branch in five arms, two branches in two arms, three branches in ten arms, four branches in nine arms and five branches in two arms. The radi… Show more

“…The radial and musculocutaneous nerve form a significant articular plexus between the lower biceps and brachioradialis and innervate the posterolateral and anterolateral capsules. 1 , 2 The skin over the posterior arm is innervated by the posterior and inferolateral cutaneous nerves arising from radial nerve. 3 Five milliliters of 0.25% bupivacaine with 30 μg of clonidine at both the sites is sufficient to provide excellent postoperative analgesia for 48 hours with rescue analgesia as and when required.…”

“…These arise from muscular branches of the flexor digitorm superficialis, pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, and/ or from the anterior interosseus nerve (AIN). However, considerable variability has been reported with respect to the number of articular branches (Bekler et al, 2008;Cavalheiro et al, 2015;Gardner, 1948;Nourbakhsh et al, 2016). An inverse relationship between the extent of median and ulnar nerve contribution to elbow innervation has been reported (Bateman, 1948;Bekler et al, 2008).…”

“…This articular branch first travels on the forms a plexus with median (Gardner, 1948) and/ or ulnar (Wilhelm, 1958) nerves to innervate the anteromedial and lateral capsule, respectively. Owing to the level of the specimen amputation (Bekler et al, 2008) or dissection methods (Cavalheiro et al, 2015), study of the contribution of the musculocutaneous nerve was limited. was that few studies had comprehensively described each of the articular branches' anatomical features through the combination of group of cadaveric dissections.…”

“…Later, the immunohistochemical studies showed that the UCN is not purely a sensory or motor nerve, it is a mixed nerve (16). UCN also supplies the proximal part of the posterior part of capsular ligament of elbow (18). In brachial plexus injuries, de-innervated muscles can be re-innervated by using the UCN (2).…”
