“…In all races, Wassel type IV seems to be the most common while Wassel type I the least common (Table 3). Rudimentary duplication is very common in the Far Eastern populations (about 15% of all thumb duplications) and is relatively rare in Caucasians (Islam et al, 1992; Tada et al, 1983). In our series, rudimentary duplications were seen in 7.9% of cases.…”

“…Islam et al reviewed 158 duplicated thumbs, with review of the radiographic, intra-operative, and pathological findings. [5] Based on their intra- and post-operative findings, 23 % of the patients changed into a different classification compared to the preoperative diagnosis. In a separate study, Islam et al performed contrast arthrography in 20 patients at the start of their corrective procedure.…”

“…Types IVI represent distaltoproximal levels of thumb duplication, while type VII represents radial polydactyly with a triphalangeal component. Although exact occurrence varies across different case series, the 3 most common types of radial polydactyly are type IV (30-46 %), type II (9-23 %) and type VII (6-32 %) [26][27][28][29][30]. While easy to apply, the clinical relevance of the Wassel classification is limited by the inability to classify surgically important features of radial polydactyly (e. g. diverging components or hypoplasia).…”
