Rattan cane is an important forest product with economic value. Its anatomical, physical, and biological properties vary with the cane height. This makes it difficult to select the appropriate cane diameter for harvesting. Understanding the material properties of rattan cane with different diameter sizes is important to enhance its utilization and performance for different end uses. Thus, the present study was performed on two rattan species, Calamus zollingeri and Calamus ornatus, at two different cane heights (bottom/mature and top/juvenile). Calamus zollingeri was studied at diameter classes of 20 mm and 30 mm, while Calamus ornatus was analyzed at a diameter class of 15 mm. The anatomical properties, basic density, volumetric swelling, dynamic moisture sorption, and biological durability of rattan samples were studied. The results showed that C. zollingeri with a 20 mm diameter exhibited the highest basic density, hydrophobicity, dimensional stability, and durability against mold and white-rot (Trametes versicolor) fungi. As confirmed by anatomical studies, this could be due to the higher vascular bundle frequency and longer thick-walled fibers that led to a denser structure than in the other categories. In addition, the lignin content might have a positive effect on the mass loss of different rattan canes caused by white-rot decay.

Calamus caesius is one of the most well-known commercial climbing palm species across the world. A comprehensive understanding of the growth-dependent variation in microstructure and polymer distribution can provide fundamental information to guide its end-use applications. In this study, we investigated the age-wise characteristics of rattan stems and the ultrastructure of fibers using electron microscopy, light microscopy, and FTIR. The results showed that the frequency of vascular bundles with a diameter of 0.55∼0.62 mm in C. caesius was 3.49∼3.97 pieces/mm2. The diameter and length of the metaxylem vessel were 0.32∼0.34 mm and 2.86∼3.00 mm, respectively. Cellulose, lignin, xylan, and HCA are mainly concentrated in the fiber sheath of vascular bundles. The distribution of major polymers in positions other than the top was relatively stable. The tissue proportion of parenchyma, xylem, and phloem did not differ significantly at different positions. The proportion of fibers from 22.27%∼25.33% showed significant differences. The fiber length was 1.43∼1.76 mm, and the diameter was 10.78∼12.63 μm. During the growth process of the rattan stem, the secondary wall of fiber cells continued to accumulate inward towards the cell cavity from 2 to 6 layers. The unique fiber properties and stable vascular bundle composition of C. caesius may have potential in fields such as composite materials or renewable energy.

Fibre content effects on mechanical, surface morphology and chemical resistance of epoxy/rattan fibre composite was investigated. By analysis of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mechanical and chemical examinations. SEM shows the rattan fibre had improved facial adhesion and a fairly uniform distribution of fibre in the matrix. Similar result were observed for flexural and tensile strengths with gradual increase in strengths with filler loading. Mechanical properties improved with increasing fibre loading, peaking at 25 wt % content. The best tensile and impact strength was obtained at 25 wt % filler with a value of 19.271Mpa and 18.876 J/m. There was a 4.48 % increase in hardness obtained at 15 wt %, 6.55 % increase in hardness at 20 wt. %, while 7.46 % increase in hardness was obtained at 25 wt % representing the highest hardness for individual fibre wt % considered. The flexural strength obtained for the samples presented increased as fibre content increased, while the best flexural strength result of 27.542 Mpa was observed at 25 wt. % fibre. The rattan-epoxy composite's weight reduced greatly after testing in 10% HCl, NaOCl, and NaOH solution. Theresult for immersing in H2O2 solution showed negligible effects and hence, a small reduction in weight loss.
