At the University of Bristol, we established a novel dissection course to complement our anatomy degree. Students enrolled in this undergraduate course are trained as comparative anatomists, with equal time given to both human and veterinary anatomy. Historically, students opted to dissect either human or veterinary donors as part of the course. To fully reflect the comparative nature of the degree, the dissection course was redesigned so students could dissect both human and veterinary specimens as part of the same course. This facilitated a wide‐ranging experience of anatomy, encouraging detailed knowledge of a multitude of species and allowing for multifaceted anatomy graduates to be ready for employment in a wide and competitive job market. Across three iterations of the amended version of the course, median marks ranged from 58.7% to 62.0%, with between 22 and 39 students enrolled. In comparison to the course prior to the introduction of the change, median marks ranged from 59.8% to 62.8%, with between 16 and 24 students enrolled. There was no significant difference between marks before or after the introduction of the concurrently comparative aspect. This paper describes the course, with learning materials and assessments considered, along with some reflection on its value. The course offers benefits to students by widening their perspective on anatomical knowledge and making them more equipped for the job market. It also broadens their understanding of form‐function relationships. However, student feedback implied that having the choice between human or veterinary dissection was preferable, and this may outweigh the perceived benefits of the course.

IntroductionPatients from developing countries who require heart valve surgery are younger and have less access to open heart surgery than those from developed countries. Transcatheter heart valves (THVs) may be an alternative but are currently unsuitable for young patients because of their inadequate durability. We developed and tested a THV utilizing two new types of decellularized bovine pericardial leaflets in an ovine model.MethodsThe two decellularized tissues [one with a very low dose (0.05%) of monomeric glutaraldehyde (GA) fixation and detoxification (DF) and the other without glutaraldehyde (DE)] were compared to an industry standard [Glycar—fixed with the standard dose (0.625%) of glutaraldehyde]. THVs were manufactured with the three tissue types and implanted in the pulmonary position of nine juvenile sheep for 180 days. Baseline and post-explantation evaluations were performed to determine the hemodynamic performance of the valves and their dynamic strength, structure, biological interaction, and calcification.ResultsHeart failure occurred in one animal due to incompetence of its Glycar valve, and the animal was euthanized at 158 days. The gradients over the Glycar valves were higher at the explant than at the implant, but the DE and DF valves maintained normal hemodynamic performance throughout the study. The DF and DE tissues performed well during the mechanical testing of explanted leaflets. Glycar tissue developed thick pannus and calcification. Compared to Glycar, the DF tissue exhibited reduced pannus overgrowth and calcification and the DE tissue exhibited no pannus formation and calcification. All tissues were endothelialized adequately. There was a striking absence of host ingrowth in the DE tissue leaflets, yet these leaflets maintained integrity and mechanical function.ConclusionIn the juvenile sheep THV model, Glycar tissue developed significant pannus, calcification, and hemodynamic deterioration. Using a very low dose of monomeric GA to fix the decellularized bovine pericardium yielded less pannus formation, less calcification, and better hemodynamic function. We postulate that the limited pannus formation in the DF group results from GA. Bovine pericardium decellularized with our proprietary method resulted in inert tissue, which is a unique finding. These results justify further development and evaluation of the two decellularized tissue types in THVs for use in younger patients.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) have special physiological functions in both brain and retinal tissues that are related to the modulation of inflammatory processes and direct effects on neuronal membrane fluidity, impacting mental and visual health. Among them, the long-chain (LC) n-3 PUFAs, as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are of special importance. Scarce data are available about the fatty acid (FA) composition of the ruminant brain in response to dietary intervention. However, we decided to examine the brain and retina FA composition of lambs supplemented with an EPA-rich microalga feed for 21 days, as it is known that despite the extensive biohydrogenation of dietary PUFAs in the rumen, ruminants can selectively accumulate some n-3 LC-PUFAs in their brain and retinal tissues. Twenty-eight male lambs were fed a control diet, or the same diet further supplemented with Nannochloropsis sp. microalga. Their brains and retina were collected for FA characterization. Overall, the brain FA profile remained unchanged, with little alteration in omega-3 docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) enhancement in both the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Retinal tissues were particularly responsive to the dietary intervention, with a 4.5-fold enhancement of EPA in the freeze-dried-fed lambs compared with the control lambs. We conclude that retinal tissues are sensitive to short-term n-3 PUFA supplementation in lambs.
