Ocotea porosa (Nees & Mart.) Barroso, commonly known as "imbuia", "canela-imbuia" or "imbuiaamarela" in Brazil, is a tree of the Southern Atlantic Forest. The present study investigates the anatomy of leaf and stem, volatile oil chemistry, as well as cytotoxicity and insecticidal activities of the essential oil of O. porosa. Species identification was achieved by anatomy features, mainly due to paracytic and anomocytic stomata; non-glandular trichomes; biconvex midrib and petiole with a collateral open arc vascular bundle; presence of a sclerenchymatous layer, starch grains and crystal sand in the stem; and the presence of HIGHLIGHTS  The anatomy features were useful for identification of Ocotea porosa.  The major volatile compounds were α-pinene, β-pinene and bicyclogermacrene.  Essential oil of O. porosa was cytotoxic against McCoy, B16F10 and MCF7cell lines.  The cytotoxic mechanism might be related to apoptotic events.  Insert 1-4 highlights no longer than 85 characters.  Insert a highlight no longer than 85 characters.  Insert a highlight no longer than 85 characters. • Insert a highlight no longer than 85 characters.

Keanekaragaman tumbuhan tidak hanya terlihat secara morfologi, tetapi dapat dibedakan pula secara anatomi. Ciri anatomi dapat digunakan sebagai pendukung dan penguat pengklasifikasian jenis tumbuhan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ciri anatomi daun yang dapat digunakan sebagai penciri taksonomi dalam suatu tingkatan taksa melalui perwakilan jenis. Jenis yang digunakan berjumlah 15, yang merupakan perwakilan dari 12 suku tumbuhan berbunga Indonesia. Metode parafin digunakan untuk mendapatkan penampang transversal dan metode perendaman dengan asam nitrit (HNO3) digunakan untuk mendapatkan penampang epidermis daun. Sebagian ciri anatomi pada penelitian dapat digunakan sebagai penciri suku hingga jenis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 15 jenis yang diamati memiliki kesamaan ciri anatomi dengan data penelitian terdahulu yang telah dilakukan baik pada tingkat suku, marga maupun jenis. Kesamaan ciri anatomi tersebut mencakup satu hingga beberapa ciri seperti tipe stomata, dinding antiklinal sel epidermis, jaringan mesofil, dan berkas pengangkut (tangkai daun dan tulang tengah daun). Kesamaan ciri yang didapatkan pada masing-masing jenis menunjukkan bahwa ciri pada struktur anatomi daun dapat menjadi bukti pembatasan takson pada tumbuhan berbunga.

Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Properties of Essential Oils from Native Brazilian Lauraceae Species

Analysis of the leaf and stem essential oils from three Brazilian Lauraceae species showed that the major constituent of O. odorifera was safrole (57.1 and 88.5% for leaves and stems, respectively) while for O. indecora leaves the major ones were the α-pinene (12.8%) and β-pinene (12.4%) andβ-bisabolol (12.2%) in the stems. For the third species, Persea venosa, the main components of leaf and stem oils were spathulenol (27.8 and 14.7%, respectively) and humulene epoxide II (11.3 and 5.1%, respectively). The bioactivity results indicated that the leaf essential oil from O. indecora was the most active for both radical scavenging activity (IC50=0.142mg/mL) and cytotoxicity against human tumor cells, with growth inhibitions for the colon tumoral line HCT-116 (100%)and breast cancer cell line MCF-7 (99.2%), at 5 μg/mL concentration. This activity might be related to the presence ofα-pinene and β-pinene in the leaf essential oil of O. indecora. However, further studies with the isolated compounds are necessary to fully understand these bioactivites.
