Habitats under distinct selective pressures exert adaptative pressures that can lead individuals of the same species to present different life strategies for their survival. The aim of this study was to analyse morphoanatomical and physiological traits for identification of adaptive ecological strategies related to both terrestrial and epiphytic life phases of Billbergia euphemiae. It was verified that B. euphemiae showed lower height, as well smaller length, width and foliar area in epiphytic phase than in terrestrial phase. Concerning to foliar anatomy, the thicknesses of leaf and water-storage parenchyma were higher in terrestrial phase, as densities of stomata and scales on the abaxial surface were higher in epiphytic phase. About the contents of photosynthetic pigments, only chlorophyll a/b ratio showed differences between life phases. In both habits, plants exhibited roots with absorption hair. In epiphytic phase, roots exhibited higher velamen thickness, smaller outer cortex, higher number of inner cortex cell layers and higher number of protoxylem poles. Thus, B. euphemiae individuals in epiphytic exhibited lots of traits related to water retention, once these plants are not into the ground. Besides, the plasticity observed may contribute for survival of this group in habitats submitted to modifications (e.g., climate change and other variations caused by human interference).

When propagated in vitro, explants receive all the nutrients needed for their growth, including carbohydrates, from the culture medium. However, it is not well understood how the type and concentration of carbohydrates can affect the functioning of the photosynthetic apparatus (particularly photosystem II) of these plants. The aim was to assess the morphophysiological responses of Billbergia zebrina plants in function of sources and concentrations of carbohydrates during in vitro culture. Side shoots of plants previously established in vitro were individualized and transferred to a culture medium containing fructose, glucose or sucrose in four concentrations (0, 15, 30 or 45 g L−1). After growth for 55 days, the chlorophyll a fluorescence transient, leaf anatomy and growth were analyzed. The concentration and type of carbohydrate employed during in vitro culture did not decrease the photosynthetic apparatus performance. However, concentrations above 30 g L−1 led to anatomical modifications, revealing some degree of stress suffered by the plants. When grown in concentrations of 15 and 30 g L−1, irrespective of the carbohydrate used, the plants presented greater stomatal density. The supplementation of the culture medium with monosaccharides caused alterations in the development of the xylem vessels, such as increased number and diameter, allowing adjustment to the microenvironmental conditions. The in vitro conditions influenced the photosynthetic and anatomical responses of plants. The concentration interval from 15 to 30 g L−1 sucrose had a better effect by not causing large changes in the performance of the photosynthetic apparatus and anatomy of plants.

RESUMO Tillandsia usneoides, conhecida como barba-de-velho, possui importância na medicina popular, com atividade antiviral, antioxidante, hipoglicêmica e antitumoral. Nesse contexto, o objetivo do trabalho foi realizar a caracterização anatômica foliar de T. usneoides, atrelado a testes histoquímicos visando auxiliar na identificação da espécie e subsidiar estudos taxonômicos e farmacológicos. O material vegetal foi coletado em uma área de restinga no norte do Espírito Santo. Para as análises anatômicas foram utilizadas técnicas usuais de anatomia vegetal. Para os testes histoquímicos, foram analisadas as seguintes substâncias: amido, lignina, lipídeos, compostos fenólicos e cristais. Em vista transversal, o limbo apresenta epiderme uniestratificada recoberta por cutícula e presença das células centrais das escamas epidérmicas. Subsequente, a hipoderme é caracterizada por células aclorofiladas, dispostas em uma única camada. O mesofilo é homogêneo, constituído por parênquima clorofiliano, cujas células possuem formato isodiamétrico. As fibras preenchem as extremidades dos feixes vasculares, os quais encontram-se dispersos na região central do mesofilo. Em vista frontal, as células da epiderme possuem parede celular ondulada, estômatos tetracíticos, geralmente recobertos pelas escamas, que são numerosas e distribuídas de forma aleatória ao longo da folha. Dentre os testes histoquímicos analisados, houve apenas reação positiva para lipídeos e os cristais do tipo ráfides possuem composição de oxalato de cálcio. Os caracteres distintivos de T. usneoides são folhas com formato circular, parede celular ondulada das células epidérmicas, estômatos tetracíticos e escamas com séries de quatro, oito e dezesseis células, sendo a ala assimétrica.
