Anatomic Study of the Quadrigeminal Cistern in Patients With 3-Dimensional Magnetic Resonance Cisternography

Abstract: The MR cisternography with 3-dimensional reconstruction was a simple and noninvasive tool providing detailed anatomic information in the living. It allowed measurement of the high variability of morphology of the quadrigeminal cistern. We defined the lateral landmarks and identified the lateral limit of the cistern. We classified the different shapes of the quadrigeminal cistern as open or closed cisterns. This can be helpful in the choice of the surgical approach to the lesions arising in this area.

“…The inferior colliculi may be especially vulnerable to rapid thiamine depletion, as may occur in the sequalae of parenteral hyperalimentation (Vortmeyer et al, 1992;Kishimoto et al, 2012). MRI studies occasionally report overt pathology involving the quadrigeminal plate such as the presence of cancer or cysts (e.g., Mancuso et al, 1988;Weindling et al, 1988;Herrmann et al, 1992;Fischer et al, 1994;Ono et al, 1998), but quantitative volumetric measures of the quadrigeminal plate are scarce (cf., Aiba et al, 1997;Angeles Fernandez-Gil et al, 2010;Columbano et al, 2010). To our knowledge, MRI-based inferior colliculi volume in WKS has not been reported.…”

While MRI studies occasionally report overt pathology involving the quadrigeminal plate such as the presence of cancer or cysts (e.g., Ono et al, 1998;Weindling et al, 1988), quantitative volumetric measures of the quadrigeminal plate are scarce (cf., Columbano et al, 2010). To our knowledge, only 2 studies provide evidence for effects of AUD on the quadrigeminal plate.…”

“…EtOH‐induced molecular alterations have been noted in the superior colliculi (Booker and Collins, 1997; Hetzler et al, 1981) that may underlie psychomotor hyperactivity (Kleinert‐Altamirano and Juarez‐Jimenez, 2014). While MRI studies occasionally report overt pathology involving the quadrigeminal plate such as the presence of cancer or cysts (e.g., Ono et al, 1998; Weindling et al, 1988), quantitative volumetric measures of the quadrigeminal plate are scarce (cf., Columbano et al, 2010). “…I n the human anatomical literature, the term “quadrigeminal cistern” (also named cisterna quadrigeminalis or cisterna venae magnae cerebri ) refers to the subarachnoid space located between the splenium of the corpus callosum and the upper portion of the cerebellum . The quadrigeminal cistern of the dog is mentioned in the major anatomy books, but is not reported in the Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria (NAV) and there are no published anatomical studies describing this structure to date.…”
