Anatomic hepatectomy as a definitive treatment for hepatolithiasis: a cohort study

“…[4][5][6]15,16 Surgical treatment of RPC generally yields better results than non-operative techniques because of removal or bypass of the diseased biliary tract along with the eradication of stones. 6 In the current study like other studies, 17,18 isolated left sided involvement was more common (49%). However, the frequency of left-sided involvement in the present study was lower than those reported by Chen et al (77%) 19 and Jiang et al (72%).…”

“…20 This difference reflects the higher frequency of bilateral involvement in the present series (38%). Most of the published series 8,17,18 had shown left lateral segmentectomy to be the predominant type of hepatic resection for the management of RPC. In the present study left hepatectomy was the commonest resection modality employed, which is in concordance with some recent studies.…”

“…Compared with other studies, [11,13] patients in our study had special characteristics, which included the following:Patients’ stones were mainly located near the second hepatic portal area (S 2 , S 4 , and S 8 ), but the affected bile duct showed no severe stricture.Majority of our patients lived in the poor rural areas which is less accessible to good medical facilities. These patients usually presented with a more advanced stage of the disease.…”

“…22 Hepatectomy is a safe and effective treatment in the management of hepatolithiasis and is associated with excellent short-and longterm results. 23,24 Management of intraoperative hemobilia varies according to different situations.
