Anastomotic Leak Is Not Associated With Oncologic Outcome in Patients Undergoing Low Anterior Resection for Rectal Cancer

Abstract: In this cohort, anastomotic leakage was not associated with risk of local recurrence. Defunctioning stoma was associated with lower incidence of clinical leakage but not with difference in oncologic outcome. Careful patient selection for defunctioning stoma helps reduce risk of clinically significant anastomotic leak.

“…There have been some reports that ostomy is associated with a lower incidence of anastomotic leakage [23][24][25] or associated with iSSI [26] ; however, in the current study, ostomy was not linked to the incidence of iSSIs. The relationship of ostomy construction to Clavien-Dindo classification IIIb was then examined because there has been a report that ostomy construction is associated with a lower incidence of severe leakage [27] . In the 170 rectal cancer cases, anastomotic leakage was frequently associated with preoperative serum albumin ( ≤ 3.2 g/dl) and no ostomy formation (p = 0.01, p < 0.001, respectively).…”
