Anaphylaxis to Patent Blue V: a case series

Abstract: Blue dyes such as Patent Blue V (PBV) have been used in medical procedures for decades, and in the United Kingdom they are routinely utilised in sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for staging the axilla in early breast cancer. However, it has long been recognised that such dyes are associated with anaphylaxis. It has recently been estimated in a prospective study that allergy to PBV occurs with a frequency of 0.9%. Since repeated SLNB (and therefore further exposure to PBV) is increasingly being advocated for t… Show more

“…In the radioactive colloid technique as well as the blue dye method, the regimen may pass through the SLN to other regional lymph nodes as a result of the surgical incision made during the procedure (17,33). Last but not least, the probability of anaphylaxis, up to 0.9%, subsequent to blue dye injection should also not to be underestimated (34). Additionally, the injection of blue dye may have as a consequence the skin / fat necrosis at the injection site or the breast tattooing which can last up to a year (35,36).…”

“…Furthermore, the current system reports physiological erectile responses by combining the stained CC explant by multiple mediators (RECs; relaxation-enhancing compounds including the NO donor and acetylcholine and prostaglandin E 1 , CECs; contraction-enhancing compounds including phenylephrine and endothelin-1). Blue dyes such as the PB dye have been used in medical diagnoses worldwide for decades (Manson et al, 2012). By directly staining the penis, the visual discrimination between the stained and unstained portions of the tissue was improved.…”
