Land surface temperature (LST) and its relationship with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) are significantly considered in environmental study. The aim of this study was to retrieve the LST of Raipur City of tropical India and to explore its seasonal relationships with NDVI. Landsat images of four specific seasons for three particular years with fourteen years time interval were analyzed. The result showed a gradual rising (3.63 °C during 1991-2004 and 1.54 °C during 2004-2018) of LST during the whole period of study. The mean LST value of three particular years was the lowest (27.21 °C) on green vegetation and the highest (29.81 °C) on bare land and built-up areas. The spatial distribution of NDVI and LST reflects an inverse relationship. The best (− 0.63) and the least (− 0.17) correlation were noticed in the postmonsoon and winter seasons, respectively, whereas a moderate (− 0.45) correlation were found both in the monsoon and pre-monsoon seasons. This LST-NDVI correlation was strong negative (− 0.51) on vegetation surface, moderate positive on water bodies (0.45), and weak positive on the built-up area and bare land (0.14). In summary, the LST is greatly controlled by surface characteristics. This study can be used as a reference for land use and environmental planning in a tropical city.

A simulation-optimization framework is established by integrating Hydrologic Engineering Center Hydraulic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) for computation of runoff, siting tool EPA System for Urban Storm-water Treatment and Analysis INtegration (EPA-SUSTAIN) for placement of Best Management Practices (BMPs), and Binary Linear Integer Programming (BLIP) for runoff reduction. The framework is applied to an urban catchment, namely Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The rainfall-runoff analysis was conducted for extreme rainfalls for historic (2016) and future events in 2050 and 2064 under Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) 6.0 and 8.5. The simulation-optimization approach in the historic scenario yielded 495,607 BMPs occupying 76.99 km2 resulting in runoff reduction of 21.54 mm (198.76–177.22 mm). Achieved runoff reduction is 38.72 (428.35–389.63 mm) and 55.03 (602.65–547.62 mm), respectively, for RCPs 6.0 and 8.5, which could meet the water demands of GHMC for 10.33 and 11.53 days. Impacts of 10 different BMP configurations of varying costs (10–70%) and pollutant load reductions (0–3%) on runoff reduction are accomplished as part of sensitivity analysis.

The deteriorations of the thermal environment due to extreme land surface temperature (LST) has become one of the most serious environmental problems in urban areas. The spatial distribution of urban biophysical composition (UBC) has a significant impact on the LST. Therefore, it is essential to understand the relationship between LST and biophysical physical composition (BPC) to mitigate the effects of UHIs. In this study, an attempt was made to understand the relationship between LST and BPC in a hot desert coastal megacity (Jeddah megacity) in Saudi Arabia. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to understand the factors affecting LST based on remote sensing indices. Correlation and regression analyses were carried out to understand the relationship between LST and BPC and the impact of BPC on LST. The results showed that, in Jeddah city from 2000 to 2021, there was a substantial increase in the built-up area, which increased from 3085 to 5557.98 hectares. Impervious surfaces had a significant impact on the LST, and green infrastructure (GI) was negatively correlated with LST. Based on the PCA results, we found that the GI was a significant factor affecting the LST in Jeddah megacity. The findings of this study, though not contributing to further understanding of the impact of BPC on LST, will provide planners and policy makers with a foundation for developing very effective strategies to improve the eco-environmental quality of Jeddah megacity.
