Analyzing Software Rejuvenation Techniques in a Virtualized System: Service Provider and User Views

Abstract: Virtualization technology has promoted the fast development and deployment of cloud computing, and is now becoming an enabler of Internet of Everything. Virtual machine monitor (VMM), playing a critical role in a virtualized system, is software and hence it suffers from software aging after a long continuous running as well as software crashes due to elusive faults. Software rejuvenation techniques can be adopted to reduce the impact of software aging. Although there existed analytical model-based approaches f… Show more

“…With the advent of peer-to-peer systems, there has been more emphasis on the need to discover and exploit diverse groups, multiple features, and distributed and dynamic resources. Bai et al [16] quantitatively analyzed software rejuvenation techniques from service provider and user views in a virtualized system deploying virtual machine monitor (VMM) reboot and live virtual machine migration techniques for rejuvenation. They constructed an analytical model by using a semi-Markov process (SMP) and derive formulas for calculating application service (AS) availability and job completion time.…”

“…Множину несправностей можна розбити на підмножини за рядом ознак, наприклад, за ознакою етапу прояву (конструктивні і експлуатаційні несправності). У дослідженнях [20,21] розглядається окрема група дефектів, пов'язаних зі старінням "aging" програмного забезпечення, яка була включена до розширеної фасетної класифікації несправностей.…”

“…Similar work is [9], uses two semi-Markov processes to plan optimal rejuvenation policy for the UNIX system, with one for building the rejuvenation model and with the other for obtaining the failure distribution related parameters required by the rejuvenation model. Bai et al [38] uses a semi-Markov process to construct the analytical model for studying software rejuvenation in virtualized systems. Garg et al [17] use the Markov regenerative stochastic petri net to model the rejuvenation behavior of the client-server type system, unavailability function is formulated based on the model.…”
