Veronica subgen. Pseudolysimachium is a group of 30 species ranging across northern Eurasia in various open habitats from dry steppe to swamps. It includes several horticulturally important species that have been crossed in the past. As such, it exemplifies a group with long taxonomic tradition, exemplified by more than 600 valid names, which also indicates its variability. In the process of identifying the evolutionary important units, molecular markers have started to help immensely. However, assigning names to identified significant groups of populations has been hindered by problems in typification. Here, we try to alleviate the problem for the taxa in southeastern Europe, which have been analyzed rigorously using AFLP fingerprints in the past, by lectotypifying 11 names and neotypifying four names, mostly based on specimens found in the Hungarian Natural History Museum Budapest (BP). This allowed revising Veronica barrelieri with its three subspecies and synonyms.

Members of Veronica subg. Pseudolysimachium are widely known and cultivated for their large and dense ornamental inflorescences. Their success as cultivated plants stems in part to the cross‐compatibility of members of the subgenus and in part to their wide ecological amplitude ranging from species growing in wetlands to those of semi‐deserts. Due to large morphological variation and the presence of intermediate forms growing in sympatry of their putative parents, hybridization between the species is believed to be frequent. The Russian Altai is a center of diversity for the subgenus and many hybrid taxa have been described from there based on morphology. Here, we test these hybrid hypotheses using dominant SRAP markers. The method relies on primers anchored in open reading frames and amplifying intronic regions, which are scored as fragment length polymorphisms. Using seven primer pairs, we analyzed 63 loci without missing data. Our data support a close relationship of V. × grisea, V. × schmakovii and V. taigischensis with V. longifolia while the influence from the other suggested parents V. incana, V. porphyriana and V. pinnata was weak (at most). Similarly, V. × sessiliflora shows strong genetic similarity with V. porphyriana but only slight influence from V. pinnata. Overall, the methodology worked reliably and provided a large number of variable polymorphisms. The lack of support for the hybrid hypotheses may be due to the relatively low number of loci analysed and/or possible backcrossing with one of the parents.

Premise of the Study Polyploidy has been long recognized as an important force in plant evolution. Previous studies had suggested widespread occurrence of polyploidy and the allopolyploid origin of several species in the diverse neotropical genus Lachemilla (Rosaceae). Nonetheless, this evidence has relied mostly on patterns of cytonuclear discordance, and direct evidence from nuclear allelic markers is still needed. Methods Here we used PCR target enrichment in combination with high throughput sequencing to obtain multiple copies of the nuclear ribosomal (nr) DNA cistron and 45 regions of the plastid genome (cpDNA) from 219 accessions representing 48 species of Lachemilla and to explore the allopolyploid origin of species in this group. Key Results We were able to identify multiple nrDNA ribotypes and establish clear evidence of allopolyploidy in 33 species of Lachemilla, showing that this condition is common and widespread in the genus. Additionally, we found evidence for three autopolyploid species. We also established multiple, independent origins of several allopolyploid species. Finally, based solely on the cpDNA phylogeny, we identified that the monotypic genus Farinopsis is the sister group of Lachemilla and allied genera within subtribe Fragariinae. Conclusions Our study demonstrates the utility of the nuclear ribosomal DNA cistron to detect allopolyploidy when concerted evolution of this region is not complete. Additionally, with a robust chloroplast phylogeny in place, the direction of hybridization events can be established, and multiple, independent origins of allopolyploid species can be identified.
