Analyzing Elementary School Students Geometry Comprehension Based on Van Hiele’s Theory

Abstract: Teaching geometry in elementary school sets out to build and develop students’ logical thinking skills. Comprehension of geometry topics is expected to develop the students’ skills to solve everyday problems. However, this learning objective has not been met as expected. In Indonesia, there are many elementary school students who still do not understand the basic concepts of geometry, such as shapes and planes. Based on this problem, the researcher conducted a study to examine students’ comprehension of geome… Show more

“…As shown in studies by Piaget (1969), formal operations are finally formed in adolescence -they are mental categorical and logical actions that facilitate structuring hypothetical and deductive reasoning without reference to a specific situation (thinking in the mode "as if..."). In mastering geometric concepts, the formal operations -analysis, generalization, comparison on various bases relying on conceptual knowledge -ensure the classification of geometric shapes (PASANI, 2019).…”

“…The significance of introducing financial education into Russian school curriculum is determined by the current state of social and economic relations in the country and their development prospects, global trends in financial education, the need to improve the level and quality of life of today's and future generations of Russians. Therefore, it is necessary to update curricula, and to determine modern content for financial education and methods for teaching it at school (Baltgailis, 2019;Rohaeti, 2019;Pasani, 2019). In this regard, nowadays the key issue is the integration of the content of financial education into the content of existing school subjects (mathematics, geography, history, etc.…”

“…Every visualization on earth is geometry, so the application of geometry is often found in everyday life in almost all areas of creativity and human reason (Cesaria et al, 2021;Fiantika et al, 2017). Geometric shapes can even be easily found in homes, such as houses, doors, blackboards, tiles, and others, so that geometry does not become a foreign thing for students (Pasani, 2019). From a psychological point of view, geometry represents abstractions from visual and spatial experiences, such as planes, patterns, measurements, and mapping (Abdussakir, 2009).…”
