Analytical synthesis technique for linear uniform‐amplitude sparse arrays

Abstract: [1] A novel analytical approach to the synthesis of linear sparse arrays with uniform-amplitude excitation is presented and thoroughly discussed in this paper. The proposed technique, based on the auxiliary array factor concept, is aimed at the deterministic determination of the optimal array element density and excitation phase tapering distributions useful to mimic a desired radiation pattern. In particular, the developed antenna placement method does not require any iterative or stochastic optimization proc… Show more

“…3) proving the correctness of the derived formulas. It is apparent, furthermore, that the IBP expansion is not only accurate but provides, also, a clear benefit in terms of computational efficiency, defined as the ratio of the time required for the calculation of the IMSBFs by means of the numerical integration of (4) and that using the closed-form expression (14). As a matter of fact, it has been numerically found out that the latter allows for a reduction of the computational burden by at least one order of magnitude.…”

“…Phase and amplitude errors introduced in the beam-forming network can lead to a degradation of the array pattern characteristics in terms of increased sidelobe level and reduction of peak directivity [3,4]. Coupling is present in all antenna arrays to some extent and can significantly affect their operation [5].…”

“…A deterministic antenna placement technique, based on the concept of Auxiliary Array Factor (AAF) [4][5][6][7], is adopted as a pre-conditioner. In this way, the initial array element locations and excitation distributions useful to mimic a given radiation pattern can be determined analytically while addressing design constraints relevant to the minimum antenna spacing, array aperture, and maximum number of power levels to be operated in the array beam-forming network.…”
