Analytical performance of the automated multianalyte point-of-care mariPOC® for the detection of respiratory viruses

Abstract: The analytical performance of mariPOC® respi test (ArcDia® Laboratories, Turku, Finland) was evaluated using nucleic acid amplification techniques (NAATs) as the gold standard. The mariPOC assay allows automated detection of antigens from 8 respiratory viruses: influenza A and B viruses, respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, human metapneumovirus, and parainfluenza viruses 1-3. Positive results from samples with high viral load are available in 20min. Nasopharyngeal aspirates (n=192) from patients with acut… Show more

“…In addition, earlier generations of POC tests used in the diagnosis of vRTIs only detected one pathogen such as influenza or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). However, newer nucleic-acid-detectionbased and non-nucleic-acid-detection-based multiplex POC tests that detect multiple respiratory viruses have been developed using bead-based or array-based technologies [26,27]. With the availability of pathogen-specific antiviral therapy, it is anticipated that there will be an increased requirement to identify the etiologic agent of the vRTI.…”

“…Their possible advantages, usefulness and cost effectiveness have recently been reported, although there are still numerous misgivings in this regard. 33 ICT tests which reveal the reaction with colloidal gold are currently the most widely used. Its simplicity (it requiring no special skills) and rapid implementation (results are obtained within 10-20 min) and the simple reading of the results are helping to spread their use as procedures to be used rapidly at the patient's bedside or in A&E as POCTs.…”

“…En este sentido se han desarrollado técnicas para detectar virus concretos de forma individual 32 y otras que aumentan el panel de virus a detectar, que aparte de VRS y gripe, detecta AD, virus parainfluenza 1 a 4, bocavirus, methapneumovirus y bacterias como neumococo. Sus posibles ventajas, utilidades y relación coste-eficiencia se han descrito recientemente, existiendo aún muchas dudas al respecto 33 .…”
