The railway network in Poland with over 19000 km is one of the biggest in the European Union (EU). At the same time safety indicators collected by the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) show that it is one of the least safe in Europe. Consequently, all the actions taken in safety management of Polish Railways are particularly important for the society. In 2015, there was a change in the main infrastructure manager’s rulebook on track maintenance. A new process rule was introduced to replace a large set of long-established action rules. However, supervision reports of the Polish National Safety Authority indicate that the new rule is not used properly. Therefore, the current process of taking maintenance decisions on Polish Railways was described and a novel concept of maintenance layers and Maintenance Board meetings was proposed. The change would allow to choose the order of maintenance activities in a more objective way than it is done nowadays, without the necessity to make any major investments.

The Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology, currently under standardization at both the ETSI and 3GPP, is expected to be one of the most promising revenue-generating services. However, to ensure the wide spread of this technology, M2M communications should be secure, fault-tolerant and selfmanaged. In this work, we add to the M2M gateway (an aggregator node in the M2M architecture) the self-healing and self-optimizing autonomic capabilities. We couple at the M2M gateway level the Host Identity Protocal (HIP) with the Reachability Protocol (REAP). REAP enables a self-healed M2M communication as it detects possible failures and seamlessly rehomes an M2M established session to a new working overlay path. Furthermore, we modify REAP to ensure self-optimized M2M communications. REAP continuously monitors M2M overlay paths and always selects the best available ones in terms of RTT. We implement our solution on the OMNeT++ network simulator. Results show that M2M sessions effectively resume after an outage affecting their currently used M2M overlay paths. Results also highlight that M2M sessions autonomically select the best available M2M overlay paths.

SUMMARYThe hybrid wireless optical broadband access network (WOBAN) is a combination of an optical backhaul and a wireless front-end, which combine the huge amount of available bandwidth of optical networks and the ubiquity and mobility of wireless access networks with the objective of reducing their cost and complexity. Survivability is one of the most important issues in WOBAN. In this paper, the survivability schemes in WOBAN are addressed from a particular point of view of the quality of recovery (QoR) method. The QoR is a comprehensive measure to evaluate the survivability schemes in terms of availability, recovery time, redundancy, and bandwidth of backup path. The specific procedures to set up the analytical models for the survivability schemes in WOBAN are given based on the QoR concept, including abstract, normalization, and application. Besides, the weights assignment is provided to calculate the QoR value for the operators, home users, or business users with different requirements, which in turn offers the userperceptive quality of service. To verify the performance of the survivability schemes by the QoR method, extensive simulations are made under different WOBAN configurations. Numerical results show that for the intra-domain survivability schemes, the wireless and optical mixed protection scheme is the best choice for failure recovery in WOBAN. The wireless scheme is the second choice for the solution, which emphasizes cost control, while for the solution that emphasizes the network performance, the 1:1 scheme is the second choice. The 1:N scheme obtains the worst QoR value as the splitter ratios increase. For the interdomain survivability schemes, optimizing backup optical networking units selection and backup fibers deployment scheme outperforms maximum protection with minimum cost scheme from the point of view of QoR.
