Analytical models for library planning

Abstract: operations Research models of the acquisition and storage functions of a library are developed. Rules for selection of materials for a depository are analyzed and models of circulation interference end usage are explored. A generalized model of library costs and benefits is proposed.

“…One of the first researchers to bring OR into the library was Leimkuhler (1966Leimkuhler ( , 1971). In the mid 1960s he carried out work developing models to help explain the long term interaction between acquisition, circulation, storage, loan period and duplication policy.…”

“…By the documentation process we mean the tracing of the store of man's knowledge via the formalized printed word. DE SOLLA PRICE [15], LINE [44], BROOKES [9], LEIMKUHLER [41,43], LISTER [45], GOFFMAN [23], RESNIKOFF [63], and DOLBY and RESNIKOFF [16] all have considered the g1'owth of litemture ove?' time.…”

“…The factor of obsolescence is discussed by BROOKES [7], COLE [14], KRAFT [38], LEIMKUHLER [41,43], MORSE [49], MORSE and ELSTON [501, JAIN [32], LISTER [45], and BUCKLAND et al [12]. They all see a possible exponential decay in a document's usefulness as it ages.…”
