Analytical design of the integrated motor used in a hubless rim‐driven propulsor

Abstract: The rim-driven integrated motor propulsor (IMP) has received much attention in recent years, owing to its superiority in flexibility, reliability, and space occupation. For this propulsion system, radially thin motors with high torque and large air gaps are essential. Two-segment Halbach array permanent magnets with unequal segment-arc are adopted to enable a thin rotor and a large air gap. The general analytical solution of the magnetic field is presented. Based on the analytical calculation of the Halbach mo… Show more

“…Cheng et al highlight the importance of using two-segment Halbach arrays with unequal segment arcs, which enables a thin rotor and large air gap for an efficient propulsion system and provides an analytical solution to the magnetic field to aid in the discussion of rotor structures [62]. They conclude that the Halbach array improves the air gap flux density and flux density distribution while the rotor core improves the air gap magnetic field.…”

“…Sci. 2022, 12, x FOR PEER REVIEW 8 of 27 2019 [27] The IMP motor was shown to have two-segment Halbach-array permanent magnets with unequal segment arcs. The uneven-segmentarc Halbach array was optimized to maximize the electromagnetic torque, according to the optimization and fabrication results, as well as the experimental motor performance results.…”

“…Therefore, the active parts (windings, magnets, magnetic cores) are sealed with specific materials to protect them from corrosion [13]. However, seawater can contribute actively to the motor cooling, and the winding current density can be augmented easily [14]. The permanent magnet machines are used in rim-driven propulsors, especially the axial flux permanent magnet machines, which are characterized by high 3D electromagnetic effects [15,16].…”

“…Furthermore, the multicomponent fluid method is used to calculate the thermal and fluid field of the integrated motor propeller. In addition, the coreless, slotless, and slotted stators of an integrated motor were compared in [14]. Furthermore, the calculation and analysis of frictional losses on the motor rotor in the flow field of the space between the stator and the rotor of the Rim-driven motor were studied.…”
