“…In particular, it took a long time to abandon the delivery of analog waveforms to the electrodes and instead adopt pulsatile stimulation that provided explicit control of the all-or-none action potentials used to convey information throughout the nervous system [ 28 ]. It was well known that only a few channels of fairly broad spectral information would convey understandable speech [ 29 ], but early work on speech processors was often devoted to preprocessing the speech signals into high level percepts such as formants instead of simply delivering the raw spectral information [ 30 ]. The electronics technology was often focused on the addition of more channels rather than more selectivity of those channels.…”

“…The excitation requires a voiced-unvoiced decision to be made and the pitch period to be computed if the speech is voiced. The energies are determined in each channel by bandpass filtering the speech signal, decimating and rectifying the output from the bandpass filters down to a 500Hz sample rate and this signal is then applied to a 25Hz lowpass filter which as well as allowing signal decimation down to 50Hz also provides for a smoother spectral envelope which can vary at a syllabic rate [4,5].…”
