Analysis of Water Adsorption on Chitosan and Its Blends with Hydroxypropylcellulose

Abstract: Chitosan (CH) and hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) adsorb water easily by hydrogen bonds formed with hydroxyl and amide groups present in their structures. Heat of adsorption is a thermodynamic parameter which is used to estimate the type of adsorbate molecule bond on a solid surface, among the others. Adsorption of water from vapour phase on chitosan, hydroxypropylcellulose and blends of both biopolymers in the form of films were carried out. Isotherms of water adsorption in the samples were described by the GAB … Show more

“…These properties are largely responsible to a wide range of applications (Ravi Kumar, 2000). Chitosan is also a valuable component of polymer blends and composites (Mucha & Miśkiewicz, 2000;Mucha, Wańkowicz, & Balcerzak, 2007). Using an appropriate technological process one may obtain films, fibres, gels and foams as well as chitosan beads of different sizes and morphologies.…”

“…Furthermore, Cs has many interesting characteristics including good mechanical strength, good film-forming properties, low cost, and hydrophilicity. [17,18] These properties have led to the diverse applications of Cs in many fields such as the sensor area. Recently, Cs film sensor has been fabricated to detect acetone concentrations in human breath, in order to precisely diagnose diabetes mellitus in patients.…”
