SUMMARYTraffic classification has recently gained much attention in both academic and industrial research communities. Many machine learning methods have been proposed to tackle this problem and have shown good results. However, when applied to traffic with out-of-sequence packets, the accuracy of existing machine learning approaches decreases dramatically. We observe the main reason is that the out-of-sequence packets change the spatial representation of feature vectors, which means the property of linear mapping relation among features used in machine learning approaches cannot hold any more. To address this problem, this paper proposes an Improved Dynamic Time Warping (IDTW) method, which can align two feature vectors using non-linear alignment. Experimental results on two real traces show that IDTW achieves better classification accuracy in out-of-sequence traffic classification, in comparison to existing machine learning approaches.

Abstract-Timely and accurate studies on the composition and nature of the Internet are crucial for continued research and innovation. The aim of this research is to aid and service emulated and simulated research methods where realism is dependent on the accuracy of Internet statistics. This study has captured anonymised, and analysed Internet traffic entering and exiting a university network. Passive measurement techniques are used to discover the mean and distribution of packet sizes. A range of Network and Transport layer statistics, such as DCSP, SACK, ECN, MSS usage, Window Scaling and Timestamps are also investigated. Active measurement techniques are used to determine Round Trip Times (RTTs) and the number of lost and misordered packets. Prior work is leveraged to explore changes in the composition and nature of the Internet over the last 10 years.

Abstract. This paper examines the cost of testing network applications using the User Datagram Protocol (UDP). Such applications must deal with packet loss, duplication, and reordering. Ideally, a UDP application should be tested against all possible outcomes of unreliable UDP transmissions. Their number, however, grows at least exponentially in the number of transmitted packets. To estimate the cost of the exhaustive testing of UDP applications, we determine the number of UDP transmission outcomes analytically. Based on this combinatorial analysis, we derive a sound, complete, and optimal algorithm for generating outcomes of unreliable UDP transmissions. The algorithm is implemented in the net-iocache extension of the software model checker Java Pathfinder (JPF). Experimental results confirm the consistency of the implementation with the analytical results. In addition, we found that JPF's state matching reduces the explored state space significantly and ensures the practicability of the approach despite of its exponential complexity.
