Analysis of trade efficiency in Serbia based on the MABAC method

Abstract: In recent times, as it is well known, various methods of multi-criteria analysis are increasingly used in order to evaluate the efficiency of companies more accurately. The aim of the study was to use a multi-criteria decisionmaking method to make a rational choice for a new location for the distribution centre of agricultural products in the northeastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, specifically in five populated areas. The required criteria were selected based on experiences from previous research in this field, and decision-makers involved in the selection were engineers and technologists from the company in question. The results indicate that the criteria of construction cost and market connectivity gained the greatest importance, and Brčko was chosen as the location for the future distribution centre among the five populated areas. Additionally, the successful application of the used multi-criteria decision-making method, in this case, the CoCoSo method, was demonstrated. This could lead to improvements in making future business decisions within this economic sector.

The main goal of this research paper is to comprehensively analyze the performance of trading companies in Serbia and propose appropriate measures for future improvement. In the specific case study, DELHAIZE Serbia achieved a return on sales of 2.50%, a return on assets of 3.56% and a return on capital of 6.95% in 2021. On the other hand, LIDL Serbia achieved a return on sales of 5.77%, a return on assets of 6.66% and a return on capital of 12.55% in the same year. Thus, LIDL Serbia performed more successfully than DELHAIZE Serbia. In general, foreign retail chains demonstrate better performance than domestic ones. One reason for this is that they adopt newer business methods and have a higher degree of digitization of the entire business.

The problem of measuring the efficiency of trade companies using methods is continuously relevant, significant and complex. With this in mind, this paper investigates the efficiency of trade companies in Serbia on the basis of the MARCOS method in order to consider the most realistic situation and improve in the future by taking relevant measures. According to the results of the MARCOS method, the top five trade companies in Serbia are in the following order: NELT CO. DOO Belgrade, KNEZ PETROL DOO ZEMUN, DELHAIZE Serbia DOO Belgrade, LIDL Serbia KD NOVA PAZOVA, and MERCATOR-S DOO NOVI SAD. Trade companies in Serbia that sell food products are well ranked. Factors that influenced this ranking of trade companies in Serbia are: general business conditions, interest rate, exchange rate, inflation, sustainable development, inflow of foreign direct investment, employment, living standards, digitalization of business, Covid-19. Also, the application of modern concepts of cost management, customer management, product category management, multi-channel sales, etc. Conducted similar research in other countries provides additional renewal to assess the efficiency of trade enterprises in Serbia and improve in the future by taking relevant measures.
