Analysis of trace organic pollutants in wastewater to assess biodegradation using wrong‐way‐round ionization in liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry

Abstract: A method to simultaneously analyze five representative PPCP tracers with a wide range of pKa values using WWR ionization in LC/MS/MS with polarity switching was developed. The method was successfully used to monitor the selected PPCPs in samples from full-scale WWTPs to assess their biodegradation under various treatment conditions.

“…The total run time for one sample was 25 min. Electrospray ionization was achieved under positive mode for TMP and CBZ, while for SA, EE2, and NP, ionization was achieved under negative mode at a spray voltage of 4 kV situated at a 90 • angle to the entrance [37]. Drying gas temperature was set as 350 • C, nebulizer pressure (N2) as 22 psi and drying gas flow rate as 11 L/min to achieve the highest sensitivity.…”

“…TOrC analyses were performed on an Agilent 1100 HPLC coupled with Agilent triple 6410 quadrupole Mass Spectrometry (Palo Alto, CA) as described elsewhere [37]. Briefly, separation was achieved on a Thermo Scientific Betabasic C18 2.1 × 100 mm, 3-m particle size column, and a guard column with the same material (Fullerton, CA).…”

“…conventional acidic mobile phases . The resultant improvement in signal-to-noise ratio provides lower detection limits under basic mobile-phase conditions (Su et al, 2014). The advantages of wrong-way-round ionization do not, however, extend to the analysis of macrolides, which have better ionization efficiencies under acidic conditions (Singh and Aga, 2014).…”

“…16,22,[24][25] Fluorescence is a highly sensitive detection method, and yet it suffers from matrix interferences when it comes to complicated environmental samples. [40][41][42][43] Even though MS is a well-established detection method, it still provides room for innovation. 12,17 Hyphenated tandem mass spectrometric determination is considered as the most popular MS method for the determination of estrogens in environmental and food samples.…”
