Analysis of Topics and Trends in Indoor Environment Research in Europe: Studies in Indoor Monitoring

Abstract: A database (IERIE) has been established that holds detailed information on indoor environment research projects across Europe, which is of potential value to both researchers and funders of research. This paper demonstrates how the database can be used to evaluate topic trends and patterns in indoor environment research, particularly focusing on indoor air monitoring. The illustrative analyses reveal, for example, the number of projects that are associated with indoor air monitoring and the types of study bein… Show more

“…However, a review of studies in Indoor Environmental Quality revealed that the relationship between indoor acoustic conditions and occupants' health seems not to have received adequate consideration (Frontczak and Wargocki, 2011). This is especially so in residences as well as other indoor environments outside the office space as evident in Aylward et al, (2005). The study remarked that regarding the relationships between aspects of the indoor environment and occupants' health, there has been considerable research into occupational (office or work) environments, while other indoor environments with significant potential health impacts have not enjoyed similar level of examination.…”

“…To monitor daily activities of the elderly people, video cameras can be deployed in smart environments such as smart homes or smart hospitals to acquire time-series activity video clips as shown in Figure 1. Indeed, several studies support that personalized lifecare and healthcare services can decrease the mortality rate [3] especially for the elderly and disabled people in smart environments [4,5]. For instance, in the European countries, it is estimated that the proportion of older people is increasing while receiving personalized healthcare services instead of receiving institutional care or nursing home care.…”
