Analysis of Three Outbreaks Due toKlebsiellaSpecies in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Abstract: Klebsiella outbreaks mainly affected premature neonates with intravenous catheters, mechanical ventilation, or both. The high mortality rate (76.7%) was notable. Resistance to multiple antibiotics, but mainly to broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotics, was observed, particularly in K. pneumoniae isolates. Molecular typing indicated that the three outbreaks were not related to one other.

“…ESBL Klebsiella has also been liked to artificial nails. 19 Melek Ayan et al 20 reported Klebsiella outbreaks in premature neonates with intravenous catheters, mechanical ventilation or both, and high mortality rate (76.7%) was noted. In this study, more than half of the patients had low birth weight, were premature, or underwent mechanical ventilation.…”

“…The pathogen ESBL‐producing K. pneumoniae is frequently encountered in outbreaks occurring especially in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) . Given that K. pneumoniae spreads through direct contact and has a high rate of colonization, the bacteria easily cause outbreaks.…”
