Analysis of the Water Quality of the Ishim River within the Akmola Region (Kazakhstan) Using Hydrochemical Indicators

Abstract: For the first time in scientific literature, this work addresses the current situation of the Ishim River water quality in the Akmola Region (Northern Kazakhstan). This work uses environmental monitoring techniques to analyze the current state of surface waters in the river. The content of main ions, biogenic and inorganic ions, heavy metals, organic impurities in seasonal and annual dynamics have been studied. Results show that, despite the tightening of requirements for wastewater discharge into the Ishim Ri… Show more

“…The river basin around the city was reported to be heavily contaminated by aqueous Mn, for which the local concrete mixing plant and crushed stone quarry were primarily responsible . For the group containing the Esil river (i.e., sites #1 and #2), components II–V accounting for 38.89% variance were related to HMs and hydrocarbons, and the potential sources of pollution might be the industries in the Karaganda–Temirtau technogenic regions on the upper stream of the river . For sites near the Burabay National Park and the central Akmola region, potential principal components could include HMs such as Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Al.…”

“…2,3 Apart from the geopolitical significance, the area drained by the Esil river and its tributaries is distinguished by the aridity and expanding water consumption. 4 The semiarid climate in the Esil river basin, in comparison to the country's other watersheds, makes it less favorable to form water resources and more vulnerable to changes in the weather pattern. 5 Moreover, besides the long-term activities of the agrarian communities, unrelenting human activities have taken place in its catchment area during the last two decades because of the construction of the new capital city, Astana.…”

“…Thus, in order to identify the salinity distribution area, mapping of surface and groundwater quality was required. The quality of groundwater depends on the evolution over time of various parameters, such as pH, salinity, Ca, Mg, or Cl [35]. The map is often compiled using the inverse distance weighting (IDW) method.…”
