The replacement of natural surfaces with synthetic materials that aggravate the environment is synonymous to urban spaces. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to evaluate the impact of land use and land cover on the land surface temperature (LST) of Oluyole Local Government Area in Ibadan, Nigeria using Landsat satellite images over a 20-year period (2000-2019). Data obtained were classified using the Maximum Likelihood algorithm supervised classification to create the Land-use Land cover (LULC) maps. Thereafter, the Land Surface Temperature (LST) was retrieved using the single-channel method. The study area experienced shifts in land cover classes, including an increase in grassland (27.35%) and built-up (17.88%) areas, and a marginal decline in forest cover (1.91%). These changes corresponded to temperature variations, with an observed increase in LST of both minimum and maximum values (4.22oC and 4.01oC) between year 2000 and 2019 respectively. Forest conservation and sustainable land use practices are recommended to mitigate adverse climate effects associated with urban sprawl and land cover and land use change. This research contributes valuable insights for policymakers and urban planners aiming to balance development with environmental conservation and climate resilience.

The rapid growth of world population and its agglomeration in cities and towns around the world is affecting the longterm outlook for humanity, in such that the process of urban growth and the effect at the peri-urban areas are universal, occurring all over the world. This study aimed at assessing the effects of population increase on the growth of periurban land in Asa local government area, Kwara State. Secondary data, via satellite imageries covering 2000, 2010 and 2021 were mainly used in analyzing the changes that occurred within twenty years. Remote sensing and GIS approaches to satellite imagery processing were adopted using ILWIS and ERDAS IMAGINE 9.2 software to subset the imageries, as well used for classification resampling. The result on built-up area reveals a consistence increase of over 80% between 2000 and 2021. The vegetation cover suffered a serious loss of vegetal land to the tune over 100 hectares due to various degree of development and expansion of the town. The water body also affected with loss in space covered with 80 hectares within the period under study. With a tremendous population increase, the study indicates a high demand for land and vegetal resources, which in turns possess a serious threat to food production. The study concludes that population increase remains the most significant determinant of peri-urban changes with a resultant effect on the wellbeing of peri-urban residents and rural dwellers. It therefore, recommends the adoption and application of strategic physical planning approach in the development of the peri-urban areas.

The most pressing environmental challenge encountered by the urban areas of Nigeria is domestic solid waste management. With its population reaching 200 million, Nigeria sustains its position as one of Africa's largest producers of solid waste. It is indicated that more than 30 million tons of solid waste are generated annually, mostly by households (URL1). Insufficient collection and disposal of municipal waste and lack of reliable transport infrastructures, including inadequate budgetary provisions make the implementation of waste management processes across the States very difficult. Despite the measures put in place by governments across the country, waste management is still a challenge to tackle in high-density residential areas, specifically in informal settlements. Public awareness and participation are critical components in waste management programs besides appropriate legislation, resilient technical support, and adequate funding if certain accomplishments are required. Based on this perspective, the research focuses on understanding what kind of solid waste is generated and how it is disposed of in a selected high-density residential area, the Nassarawa “A” Ward in Minna city where the existence of rising informal settlements is a pressing issue. A household survey is conducted amongst informal settlers to assess the connection between the level of education of households, their awareness of the topic, and also, willingness to participate in the process. The research results proved that majority of the residents were concerned and affected by the poor state of their environment due to the lack of an appropriate solid waste management approach. Very few residents had awareness regarding the stages of waste management such as reusing, recycling, and composting. The research concludes that based on the results obtained from the survey, any waste management strategies introduced should encourage the education of residents and their active participation in the process.
