Analysis of the Static Behavior of a Single Tree on a Finite Element Model

Abstract: This work deals with the innovated complex process of tree risk assessment, from precise geometrical tree shape acquisition to building and analyzing a finite element model under specified load. The acquisition of the 3D geometry of the tree was performed by means of terrestrial laser scanning. Obtained point cloud was optimized and additionally converted to a 3D CAD model, representing the bearing skeleton compound of trunk and main branches. For structural analysis purposes, a finite element model (FEM) was … Show more

“…Since the growth characteristics of fruit trees conform to the Euler-Bernoulli beam [28,29], where the length is more than five times the cross-section, this study simplified the trunk to a beam model with an equal cross-section, where one end is fixed and the other end is free, and a concentrated mass is present at the free end [30][31][32][33]. The coordinate system xoy was constructed with the root of the tree trunk as the origin O, and a unit length of the beam unit was used for force analysis, as shown in Figure 1.…”

“…One direction tends to develop increasingly more refined and sophisticated tree models [6,7] . The finite element model considering precise tree geometry and wind-tree interaction is particularly popular [8][9][10][11][12][13][14] . The other direction is more practical and application-oriented.…”
