Thermal comfort, indoor air quality (IAQ), and energy use are closely related, even though these have different aspects with respect to building performance. We analyzed thermal comfort and IAQ using real-time multiple environmental data, which include indoor air temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide (CO2), and particulate matter (e.g., PM10 and PM2.5), as well as electricity use from an energy recovery ventilation (ERV) system for a childcare center. Thermal comfort frequency and time-series analyses were conducted in detail to thoroughly observe real-time thermal comfort and IAQ conditions with and without ERV operation, and to identify energy savings opportunities during occupied and unoccupied hours. The results show that the highest CO2 and PM10 concentrations were reduced by 51.4% and 29.5%, respectively, during the occupied hours when the ERV system was operating. However, it was also identified that comfort frequencies occurred during unoccupied hours and discomfort frequencies during occupied hours. By analyzing and communicating the three different types of real-time monitoring data, it is concluded that the ERV system should be controlled by considering not only IAQ (e.g., CO2 and PM2.5) but also thermal comfort and energy use to enhance indoor environmental quality and save energy based on real-time multiple monitoring data.

Strong ventilation increments are currently suggested for containing the airborne diffusion of COVID-19 in indoor environments. However, it can involve an unacceptable growing of energy consumption. Therefore, maximum care must be addressed to improve efficiency of ventilation heat recovery (VHR). For this purpose, this paper investigates the opportunity of a technical solution. Consisting in adding downstream of the most diffuse heat recuperator, a heat pump using exhaust air as a cold source. An autonomous high efficiency air handling unit (HEAHU) was modelled for a school application. By simulation a performance comparison was carried on with two alternative systems based only on an exhaust air heat pump (EAHP) or on a heat recuperator for different weather conditions. Results indicated that the milder climate strongly penalizes heat recuperator and this fact deeply influences the conclusions. HEAHU saving compared to energy consumption of only heat recuperator is between 31% and 46%. For EAHP this saving varies from 2.5% to 48%. Only with a milder climate, EAHP presents a lightly greater saving than HEAHU. Heat pump technology looks to be very performing to foster the efficiency of VHR, especially in presence of high ventilation rates.

In the Jeddah climate region, a lot of energy is assigned to the air handling unit (AHU) sector, which should be reduced by using energy-efficient solutions. As the air passes through the cooling coil, a lot of energy is consumed to reduce the temperature along with humidity so that if the air is precooled in the previous stages, energy consumption in this energy-intensive section will be diminished. Using the coldness of the return air in the heat recovery unit (HRU), the incoming air is precooled. Based on the thermodynamic calculations, in June, July, and August, the cooling coil power demand reduces by 11.6, 13.3, and 12%, respectively. In summer, owing to using HRU, an energy-saving by 76.08 MWh is achieved (12.34% reduction in energy demand). By the incorporation of the solar collectors in the AHU, heating coil demand diminishes by 1,206, 1,399, and 1,367 kWh in June, July, and August, respectively. To improve the solar-assisted AHU effectiveness, the MWCNT nanoparticles are injected into the collectors, and it is found that the saving-energy capability improves by 17.7% using MWCNT-water at 0.1 vol.%.
